Owner Managed Businesses

“What must I do first?” This is the often desperate wail of the small business owner.

Someone who runs their own business finds themselves being the marketer, the manager, the finance department and the operations manager all rolled into one. Just because a business is small, does not mean that those tasks do not need to be done, and done properly. Trying to be all things to all people can often result in feelings of frustration and failure.

In his book The E-Myth Michael Gerber suggests that you create an organisation chart for your business. Once this is done, and you have a clear picture of the main areas that need attention, you can allocate or outsource tasks based on your staff and funds availability. Perhaps you need a CFO, but you can only afford a bookkeeper. Or maybe you need an MBA consultant who understands the challenges of small business but you are not able to locate one.

Who can you turn to who understands small businesses, can interpret the figures and work with your dreams and help you to reach the next level of business success?

I am an accountant, but I’m not just an accountant. Unlike many other accountants, I balance your year-end books and your tax return but I will also interpret them for you and use those figures to help you make good decisions about your business. In this process, I use coaching. Unlike traditional business consultants who arrive with their MBAs and other qualifications and TELL the business owner what to do, I work WITH you, providing you with tools that you can use in the future to solve your business problems yourself.

I provide my clients with a “just-in-time” MBA. In other words, I assess what information they need to solve the “now” problem. Based on my years of experience academic research, I produce a short module of information that I know they will read, or a model that I set up and explain to them and off they go. Clients get to where they need to go quickly and without stress.

In the normal cycle of growth, the success of this cycle leads to the challenges of how to approach the next level. The relationships that I have with many of my clients have been in place for several years which is important for a full understanding of your business’s changing needs. The benefits of appointing a resource like me, is that you have someone who is interested in the wellbeing of your business, not just in your SARS requirements and year-end figures. I understand the needs of small business owners and can help you overcome hurdles that seem insurmountable on your own.

Coaching for Personal Development

There are many definitions of coaching. For each coach their own methodology evolves from their personal life experience combined with their coach training. One-0n-one coaching sessions are powerful when the client has a clear objective especially regarding personal development or leadership skills.

Within an organisation the power of coaching can be leveraged by coaching a group at the same time. That will include one-on-one coaching as well as group sessions that explore knowledge and solve system issues.
